Coko was born Cheryle Elizabeth Gamble to Tibba Gamble on June 13, 1974 in Brooklyn, New York. Born and raised in  a Pentecostal church Coko has been a song bird since birth. She began singing at the sweet age of three and sang her first solo in church when she was just six years old. By the time Coko was eleven she had already begun recording with a live choir.

Coko was an only child and grew up with it being just her and her mother( Coko's father was not in the picture until recently). Coko's mother was also a well known gospel singer who instilled only the best values in her daughter. As an adolesent, outside church, Coko liked to hang with her friend Taj and listen to their favorite boy band, New Edition which one the hottest group in the eighties. Coko and her friend would enter talent shows mocking the group they loved so much. She and Taj would also fight over which one of them would be Bobby Brown.

Later Coko moved to the Bronx where met a new friend. Leanne Lyons or just Lelee. As with Taj the two began singing together and soon decided to start a gospel group. The gospel group soon feel and the girls decided to go R&B. Over the years the though of becoming famous singers died out until Lelee me the mother of a famous producer and called Coko up who then turned around and called up her old friend in Brooklyn Taj. This how SWV was formed in a short story.

The group released Four Albums. "It's About Time", which sold over seven million copies to date. "New Beginning", which sold over four million copies and later albums , "Release Some Tension" and "An SWV Special Christmas". A fifth album was later released which was, "SWV's Greatest Hits".

Over the course of time tension began to tear the group apart. Earlier in their career Coko had been offered a solo deal but turned it down. By their third album titled "Release Some Tension", that's exactly what they needed to do. Diffrences in opinions were causing major problems in the group. Coko's constant time spent away from her son was eating her up. Taj stated that Coko cried when while on tour she learned she had missed Jazz's first step. Producers such as Brian Morgan stated that, "Working with SWV can be very easy or a nightmare, depending on how Coko feels that day". Later it was final. Coko announced she was going solo. At first It seemed that alot of the blame was put on Coko. Ignorant people trying to pin a bad name on her saying she was spoiled and moody. However it didn't last.

On August 10, 1999. "Hot Coko" was released. Filled when heart stopping ballads and laced with groovy sounds of  up tempo tracks such as, "You And Me" by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins Hot Coko became a must have that summer. Coko broadened her horizons by making appearances on more shows than ever. From Bet Live to Motown Live and many many more. She did several interviews online, in magazines and on T.V. clearing up rumors about problems within the former group. All the while Radio and Video shows were bumping her first single off the album, "Sunshine", which Coko dedicated to her son Jazz Ishmeal Butler.

Now just over a year after the release of her first solo album Coko has done it again. She has just finished recording her second solo album "Music Doll ". And will soon record her first gospel album. Keep it locked right here and check out my news board for more info. NEWS   THE DOLL HOUSE   FUN FACTS   LYRICS   THE WEB MASTER
